  • 3 eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 9 tbsp unsalted butter (for caramel)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar (for caramel)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for caramel)
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla (for caramel)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (for caramel)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, cold (for frosting)
  • 2 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease round baking pans.
  2. Brown the butter in a saucepan until golden and nutty; let it cool slightly.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, beat cooled brown butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar until light. Add eggs one at a time and mix in vanilla.
  5. Gradually add buttermilk to the mixture followed by the dry ingredients until just combined.
  6. Divide batter into pans and bake for approximately 36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. For the caramel sauce, melt butter with brown sugar in a saucepan and stir in heavy cream until smooth; add vanilla and salt.
  8. Make frosting by beating cream cheese and powdered sugar together until creamy.
  9. Once cakes are cool, layer them with caramel sauce and frosting.
